10-Day Surgical Volunteer Teams Clinical Job Shadowing Near Machu Picchu

Get ready to serve and learn

Student interns will work with doctors and nurses to supply the clinic, prepare the operating rooms, prepare the medical supply and work areas, and help as the clinicians triage surgical patients and observe surgical procedures.

  • Provides International Medical Volunteer experience and clinical job shadowing as our U.S. clinician led teams deliver medical and surgical care to the local communities in the Cuzco region of Peru near Machu Picchu.
  • Up to 60 hours of Medical and Surgical clinical shadowing  hours
  • Led and mentored by licensed U.S. physicians
  • Limited to a maximum of 10 students per cohort.
  • 3:1 or better student-to-doctor ratio.
  • Training sessions on medical school applications and interview best practices
  • Observe numerous surgeries and consultaions

  • Excursion to Machu Picchu after the work is done

  • Work in a non-English-speaking setting. Most of our patients speak Quechua or Spanish.
  • Observe and Learn about patient care in a developing world setting
  • Optional excursions to Cuzco and other sites in the Peruvian Sacred Valley

  • We follow the AAMC guidelines for ethical clinical shadowing. It is important to remember that the student is there as an observer and will never participate in any activity that could be construed as practicing medicine.

This is Not Spring Break

  • Our program is no Spring Break party weekend.

  • It is serious, rich and intensive, with 60 hours or more of clinical job shadowing in a short one week time  span.

  • Other programs require 3 times as much time to get the same number of hours

  • Our per hour investment is about $85 per shadowing hour compared to $150 per shadowing for other programs.

  • To get the same number of hours you will spend $6000 more with other less-focused clinically-intensive programs.

  •   Scholarships are available, but you must apply early!!
